Digitalisation and developments in new media technologies are leading to significant transformations in journalistic practices. Immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR) and 360-degree video are giving rise to new forms of narrative and testimony in news production and presentation processes. However, studies on immersive journalism in the literature mostly focus on user effects such as viewer experience, empathy, and the feeling of being there, while the role these technologies play in journalists' news production processes has received only limited scholarly attention. This research aims to examine the impact of immersive technologies on journalists' witnessing practices and news discourse. The central research problem concerns whether immersive experience alters the ways in which journalists acquire information and bear witness to events, and how this experience influences the discursive construction of news texts in terms of reliability, level of detail, presentation of evidence, and ethical framing. The study employs a comparative qualitative text analysis method based on a matched design. Twenty professional journalists, forming the study group, were asked to report on the same event concerning the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, first based on a traditional press release and then after experiencing a 360-degree video using VR glasses related to the topic. A total of 40 news texts were obtained and analysed at the sentence level based on John Durham Peters'“Witnessing Theory”and within the framework of the“Evaluation”and“Evidentiality”approaches. The research findings show that the immersive experience can change the epistemological relationship journalists establish with the event and produce noticeable differences in the construction of news discourse. It is observed that news texts produced after the VR/360° experience contain a higher level of detail, references to visual witnessing, and sensory descriptions, and that journalists tend to position themselves more explicitly as witnesses to the event. This situation reveals that immersive technologies are not only a new presentation format but also a tool with the potential to transform the journalist's role as a witness and the news production process. Consequently, this study demonstrates that immersive technologies shift journalists from the position of passive transmitters of information or indirect mediators to that of an“immersive witness”who experiences events in a bodily and spatial manner. However, while this increases the empathetic and atmospheric intensity of the news, it also carries the potential to weaken the broader narrative context and critical distance required by journalism. Immersive journalism does not eliminate the search for truth; rather, it confronts journalists with new ethical responsibilities, highlighting the need for new editorial mechanisms in newsrooms capable of balancing emotional intensity with factual context.
