This study examines how scientific knowledge has risen to a privileged position within the modern knowledge framework and explores the epistemological divide that has emerged between the natural sciences and the humanities. The starting point of the study is the claim that C. P. Snow's conceptualization of the“two cultures”reveals a deeper epistemic problem inherent in the institutional and intellectual organization of modern knowledge, beyond merely a lack of interdisciplinary communication. In this thesis, scientific knowledge is approached not as a neutral and universal domain of truth independent of historical and social context—as commonly assumed—but rather as a historical form of knowledge that gains legitimacy through specific institutional mechanisms, regimes of expertise, and criteria of truth. In this context, the study discusses the historical processes through which the epistemological superiority of modern scientific knowledge was established, how disciplinary boundaries became increasingly rigid, and how this division continues to be reproduced within contemporary academic and social structures. The thesis investigates how knowledge was redefined in the transition from Ancient Greek thought to the modern scientific revolution. Through the works of Bacon, Descartes, Galileo, and Newton, knowledge was reconstructed on the basis of experiment, mathematics, and method, separating itself from traditional authorities. As a result, scientific knowledge became a measurable and controllable activity, while the natural sciences gained epistemological superiority in the modern world. The study demonstrates that science and philosophy gradually diverged in the modern era: while modern science came to rely on methodological control, philosophy evolved into a field that questions the conceptual foundations and legitimacy of knowledge. Furthermore, it is argued that the superiority of scientific knowledge derives not merely from methodological success, but also from the structuring of modern institutions such as universities, laboratories, and regimes of expertise. In this regard, the thesis evaluates the“two cultures”divide as a structural consequence of the modern order of knowledge and argues that the superiority of scientific knowledge has been constructed through historical, institutional, and epistemological processes. Rather than viewing the“two cultures”divide as a superficial rupture to be reconciled, the study interprets it as a structural tension inherent in the organization of modern knowledge itself. While advocating for a reconsideration of disciplinary boundaries, the study also opens scientific knowledge to discussions concerning its social and ethical responsibilities without denying its power. In this respect, the thesis aims to provide a critical contribution to the literature on philosophy of science, history of science, and contemporary science–society relations.
