This study aims to examine the conceptions of death and the afterlife in Ancient Egypt within the framework of the History of Religions methodology and the phenomenological approach. In Ancient Egyptian thought, where death was conceptualized as a transitional stage, the afterlife emerged as a realm in which individuals continued their existence while preserving their identity. Belief in the afterlife functioned as a source of order, continuity, and meaning in both individual and social life. The conceptions that developed within this belief system were shaped by the geographical conditions of the Nile Valley, cosmological observations, social and political structures, and cultural elements, giving rise to a distinctive belief in the afterlife. Initially characterized by features exclusive to the king, the conception of the afterlife gradually expanded to broader segments of society through ritual and moral criteria. An examination of funerary texts such as the Pyramid Texts, Coffin Texts, and the Book of the Dead demonstrates that conceptions of the afterlife were spatially structured around the concept of the Duat. It further reveals that, over the course of history, celestial and underworld elements were integrated within the framework of the concept of the akh, understood as a transformed and effective mode of existence after death. In this context, the cycle of death and rebirth associated with the cults of Ra, Osiris, and Nut, together with the concept of divine judgment developed in accordance with the principle of Maat, constituted the moral and ritual foundations of posthumous existence. In conclusion, the afterlife in Ancient Egypt was envisioned as an idealized Egypt, and this worldview may have exerted direct or indirect influence on subsequent cultures and religious traditions.
