Özet
Spekülatif kurguda beden sosyal yapının izlerini taşıyan bir araç olarak kullanılmaktadır. China Miéville gibi yazarların da yazdığı Yeni Tuhaf akımında kullanılan grotesk, evrenin tuhaflıklarını perçinlemekle birlikte, bedenin sosyal yapının baskısıyla birlikte bürünmek zorunda kaldığı şekli yansıtır. Bu çalışma Yeni Tuhaf akımında bedenlerin bir bedensel sermaye aracına dönüşerek dominant ideoloji tarafından ürünleştirilmesini Pierre Bourdieu'nün sosyolojik kuramları çerçevesinde incelemektedir. Bir Fransız sosyolog olan Bourdieu'ye göre toplumun içselleştirilmiş ve görünmez olan güç dengeleri üst sınıfı kayırmakta ve alt sınıfa tahakküm etmektedir. Spekülatif kurgunun kurgusal evrenleri bu oluşumları içlerindeki eserlerde toplumdaki sosyopolitik yapıyı yansıtacak şekilde gösterebilmektedirler. China Miéville'in Yeni Tuhaf romanlarında beden bir grotesk temsili olmanın ötesine geçerek sosyal yapının varlığını empoze ettiği gözden çıkarılabilir ürünlere dönüştürülmüştür. Elçilik Kenti sosyal sistemini kolonileşen bir gezegende insan ve uzaylı ırkın iletişimini sağlamak için biyolojik olarak geliştirilerek üretilmiş Elçiler ve uzaylıların dil yapısına hizmet etmeleri için gruplaştırılan insanlar ile kurarken; Bas-Lag üçlemesindeki evren—Perdido Sokağı İstasyonu, Yara ve Demir Konsey— bunu suçlu bulunan insanların bedenlerini bir ceza yöntemi olarak biyolojik ve mekanik materyallerle yeniden dönüştürerek yapmaktadır. İki kurgusal evrende de beden topluma hizmet edecek özelliklerine indirgenmiş, bu da bedensel sermayenin üçlü bir beden temsili üretmesine sebep olmuştur: kutsanmış beden, estetize edilmiş beden ve canavarlaştırılmış beden. Bu tezin amacı Pierre Bourdieu'nün sosyolojik çerçevesinden yararlanarak China Miéville'in Yeni Tuhaf romanları olan Embassytown ve Bas-Lag üçlemesinde sosyal hiyerarşinin oluşumunu ve bu oluşumda kullanılan araçların nasıl çalıştığını anlayarak bu sosyal alanın bedensel sermayenin bir birimi olarak kullanılmak üzere ürünleştirilmiş bedenlere uygulanan şiddeti meşrulaştırdığını analiz etmektir.

In speculative fiction, the body is used as a tool that carries the inscriptions of the social structure. The grotesque, employed in the New Weird genre that authors like China Miéville also writes in, not only reinforces the weirdness of the universe but also reflects the form the body is forced to take under the suppression of the social structure. This study examines the commodification of bodies by the dominant ideology as they are transformed into an instrument of corporeal capital within the New Weird, framed around the sociological theories of Pierre Bourdieu. According to the French sociologist Bourdieu, the internalized and invisible power mechanisms of society favour the dominant group and oppress the subordinated group. The fictional universes of speculative fiction are able to illustrate these formations in a manner that reflects the sociopolitical structure of society. In China Miéville's New Weird novels, the body supersedes being a representation of the grotesque and becomes a discardable commodity that the social structure imposes its existence upon. Embassytown establishes its social system on a colonized planet with biologically engineered Ambassadors produced to ensure communication between humans and the alien race as well as humans who are grouped in order to serve the alien's linguistic structure; while the universe of the Bas-Lag trilogy—Perdido Street Station, The Scar, and Iron Council—achieves this by remaking the bodies of convicts with biological and mechanical materials as a form of punishment. In both of these fictional universes, the body is reduced to the traits that serve society, which causes an emergence of a tripartite representation of the body caused by the corporeal capital: the sanctified body, the aestheticised body, and the monsterised body. The aim of this thesis is to employ Pierre Bourdieu's social framework in order to better understand how the social hierarchy and the tools that work in these constructs are created in China Miéville's New Weird novels Embassytown and the Bas-Lag trilogy, and analyse how this social field justifies the violence that is inflicted upon the bodies where they are commodified as currency in the corporeal capital.
