Ill ABSTRACT MASTER THESIS AN ARCHETYPAL APPROACH TO TONI MORRISON'S BELOVED Ayla BAYGIN O?UZ Supervisor: Assistant Prof. İsmail ÖGRETÎR 2002-Page: 89 This study is an archetypal approach to Toni Morrison's novel, Beloved in the light of Jungian criticism. Jung's theory called 'collective unconscious' has been the leading to examine the archetypes in Beloved. According to Jung, 'collective unconscious' is the knowledge store of mankind and this knowledge is transformed from one generation to other. So it is possible to meet them in different cultures throughout the world. Collective unconscious includes archetypes. Archetypes are the contents of collective unconscious. For Jung, they are the primordial images, symbols, dominant images, mythological or archetypal images found in the collective unconscious. Jung attached a great importance to mythology in archetypal criticism because myths are, by nature, collective and communal. He explained man not as an isolated indivudual, but as being linked with the whole of mankind through the collective unconscious. In his individuation theory, Jung claims ifa person is able to know himself as a whole with his good and bad sides, he can psychologically be healthier. Archetypes forming separate systems within personality are very crucial for Jung. These are mainly the persona, the anima and animus, the shadow, and the self. However, we can not put a limit to the number of possible archetypes. They are as diverse as human experience itself. Some of them take the form of persons, such as the hero, the child, the trickster, the earth mother, the demon.IV Some of them represent the forces of nature like the sun, the moon, wind, fire. We meet them as situation, place or incidents like birth, rebirth, death. In Beloved, Toni Morrison depicts the paradoxical nature of the good and the evil combining the supernatural and the real with an emphasis on ancestry. By this way, she tries to rediscover the black American's roots and reflect the whole experience of slavery. Beloved is the story of a mother's rough love, who slits her little daughter's throat in order not to send back her infant to slavery. With the resurrection of Beloved (Sethe's dead infant) after eighteen years, Sethe and the others are obliged to recall the horrible memories of the past. In the novel, characters enact the terrible life conditions of black people in American society. So, Morrison writes not just about individuals and individual experience but about the common experience of a race and a community. Hence, she enriches her novel using different archetypes and has no difficulty in using them because she tells the story of a common experience of black Americans. In the study, the Jungian patterns in Morrison's Beloved and how the author conveys the universal messages ? by using archetypes have been analyzed. Consequently, Beloved is an important novel both with its profound meaning and powerful narration lines and also with its handling the subject matter in point of archetypal criticism.
