ABSTRACT One aspect that creates the difference among societies depends on the standard of education that students receive at school. Only the societies that constantly improve their education standard can develop themselves. What are the elements which enable a school to reach a high standard of education, which will have very important impact on societies? The mean purposes of this project are: a) to determine the factors that affect the school standards and to what extend students care about quality b) to find out the factors that influence the view point of the students at school. 333 students chosen at random from one Anatolian High School, one Vocational High School, one Super High School, one Private School and two High schools made up this research. The schools were chosen from both European and Anatolian side of Istanbul in 2000-2001 Academic year. In this research, the scanning method has been used. As a data collecting device together with a Personal Information Questionnaire and A school Evaluation sheet which comprises 78 questions along with five sub-dimensions, were implemented. This research asks two questions: a) the relation between students personal traits and their opinions towards quality of their schools, b) the relation between their personal traits and the importance given to the quality of their school. The outcomes of this research are as follows: 1) The areas to which the total quality has mostly applied are - Physical environment - The quality of teacher XV- Curriculum - Cultural and social structure - Technical structure' 2) When the relation between the application of the quality concept in schools and the importance given by the students was examined the results were a significant 0,05 margin. We have learned that the importance of quality concept -is very much welcomed, but the application of this concept has been well developed. 3) When compared the students whose school quality was relatively low with: the indecisive ones whose school quality was high the ones whose school quality Was low were seen to have focused more on the quality* concept. 4) Comparing the ones whose parents have a high opinion of their schools with the ones whose parents rarely or never have a high opinion of their schools the ones whose parents have high opinions of their schools believe that quality standard has been applied to their schools. 5) From all the questionnaires, we have reached the fact that the vocational schools are the ones with the highest quality. On the other hand Vocational School students that led us to the fact mentioned above were the ones who cared about the quality the least. What seemed to be paramount for Anatolian School students was quality. This was gathered from all questionnaires and sub-questionnaires. In application common scale, we have found no difference between private high schools and vocational high schools. There is no significant difference between Private High Schools and Vocational Schools in terms of their viewpoints on quality concept. Nevertheless in sub-scale evaluation technical quality and quality of teachers according io tbitf research are in favour of Anatolian High Schools. In practice quality of teachers has resulted in favour of Private High School.Compared to Vocational High Schools no significant difference has been found between Vocational High Schools and Private * High School in sub-scale Application Evaluation.
