ABSTRACT This study has been carried out to analyze and evaluate the coursebooks which are being used for ELT in the state schools in Turkey in terms of their form and content. The first chapter, in which assumptions about the present study are made, attempts to give the background to the study as well as the aim and the scope. The second chapter reviews literature relevant to the subject and provides the definitions of the terms which are frequently used in course design and materials design. In the third chapter the needs and goals for teaching/learning English are listed in addition to the survey of the existing program. It also explains the importance and the required qualities of a coursebook. In chapter four, the data collection techniques used in the present study are introduced and the interpretation of results is presented along with some remarks on the results. Chapter five contains the suggested syllabus and two sample units based on the suggested syllabus as well as the sample units form the units from the existing materials. The sixth chapter includes a brief summary of the study and further remarks. The present study has six appendices. The first appendix is the existing syllabus provided from Bahcelievler Ortaokulu. The second appendix displays the course description for An English Course for Turks. The third appendix contains the objective evaluation for.m for the present student's book, whereas the fourth appendix includes the checklist for the teacher's manual. Appendix five displays the teacher questionnaire, and appendix six shows the student questionnaire. - 11
