ABSTRACT This study was carried out to devise supplementary reading materials iri order to reinforce“Opening Strategies”written by Brian Abbs and Ingrid Preebairn, a course book which is widely used in Turkey. The purpose of the first chapter is to explain the problem, the aim and the scope of the study about the subject. The second chapter begins with the place of reading in the major approaches and methods, and then continues with what reading is. In the following sections, the relevant literature under the following headings; levels of reading, purpose in reading, ways of reading and reading and motivation are reviewed. The criteria used in selecting the suitable reading materials are given in the last part of this chapter. -The analysis of the textbook,“Opening Strategies”and suggested reading texts are presented in the third chapter. The final chapter presents the conclusion.
