ABSTRACT This study has been carried on to provide a particular help to those teaching or learning literature in EFL classes. The first chapter introduces the background i the aim and the scope of the study briefly. The second chapter deals with the concepts that are essential to study literature in the light of the tradition. The third chapter summarizes the concepts that are necessary to study a work of art in the light of stylistics. The fourth chapter reviews the critical concepts that are essential to evaluate a short story which is a miniature novel. The fifth chapter contains a short story 'Araby' by James Joyce and its interpreta tion in the light of the critical concepts given in the previous chapters. The sixth chapter contains a brief I summary of the present study.
