Özet
The purpose of the study was to compare a constructivist approach in teaching and atraditional method about basic components of living beings in 9th grade biology lessonsThe study conducted to 54 9th grade students in two different classes at a high schoolin Ankara in 2004-2005 academic year. Teaching methods were randomly assigned after thepre-test. The researcher taught the subject for 7 weeks according to Rodger Bybee's 5Elearning cycle model to experimental group and with traditional method to control group.Same laboratory works conducted to both classes.The research design was pre-test post-test experimental design. Basic components ofliving beings test was administered as pre-test and post-test. The data which was obtainedfrom the research were analysed with SPSS packet program. In order to test hypothesis anindependent t-test was conducted. The result of the analysis showed that students who weretaught by costructivist method were more successful than students who learn traditionalmethod.According to the findings 5E learning cycle model which was based on theconstructivist approach is more effective than traditional method for students'learningbiological subjects.
