ABSTRACTFUNCTIONALIZATION OF ATACTIC POLYPROPYLENEÜNVER, Halil.ÕUÕNNDOH8QLYHUVLW\Graduate School of Natural and Applied SciencesDepartment of Chemistry, M. Sc. ThesisSupervisor : Prof. Dr. Zeki ÖKTEMJune 2005, 80 pagesIn this work functionalization of atactic polypropylene, APP, withdifferent allylic monomers, without tendency of polymerization, was aimed. Itis known that chain degradation and crosslinking reactions take place duringfunctionalization reactions. The electrochemical functionalization of APP wasstudied in order to develop a new functionalization technique, in which thesereactions occur in minimum extent. However, the amount of bonding wasfound to be very low. Therefore, the studied new technique was decided tobe insufficient for the functionalization of APP. Therefore, modification of APPwas continued with solution functionalization.APP was functionalized with 4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol, 4-allylanisole4-allyl-1,2-dimethoxybenzene and allylbenzene in toluene by using benzoylperoxide. The effect of functionalization time, concentration of initiator andconcentration of functional compound on the extent of functionalization wasstudied and the molecular weights and glass transition temperature of thesamples were determined. The obtained results indicated the formation ofchain degradation and crosslinking reactions during functionalizations. However, the molecular weights of the samples observed to be higher thanthe molecular weight of APP. Also, Tg values of the samples were found tobe higher than the Tg of APP. However, it was observed that Tg of thesamples mostly varried with the molecular weights or heterogenity indices ofthe samples rather than depending on the amount of bonded functionalcompounds. The spectroscopic analyses of the samples were carried with FT-IR.However, due to low bonding of functional compounds the mechanism offunctionalization could not be clarified.Key words : Atactic polypropylene, functionalizationii
