Leadership has been character i zed in many ways over the years. I have de-fined leadership as social influence in organizations that has implications -For achieving organizational goals. It is important to distinguish this type of influence from the more general functions of management, which include a variety of administrative duties that lie beyond the scope of leaderahi p. This potential is illustrated by French and Raven's five bases of power, only one of which is limited to people with formal authority. Theories of leadership have undergone an evolutionary process, begining with the belief that personal traits distinguish leader» from folowaru.Tha most prominent of thuuu behavior theories is based on the Ohio State leader-behavior dimensions of consideration and initiation of structure. As did earlier trait approaches, behavior theories proved inadequate for explaining leadership, and I/O psychologits turned to contingency theories. These theories specify that leader effectiveness depends on certain combinations of conditions, traits, or behaviors. The best known of these is Fiedler's LPC theory, which states that leader effectiveness depends on the level of situational favorability and a leader trait measured by the LPC scale. Other well-known contingency theories include path-goal theory and vVoom and Yetton's rational decision- making model. Another influential approach to leadership considers the nature of individual leader-follower dyads. Graen' s Vertical Dyad Linkage theory explores the quality of supervisors- subordinate relationships, and their effects on individual and group performance. Final ly, leadership theory has come under attack by those who believe that it is distinguishable-) from other conatruottu, or that is simply a convenient explanation for events in organizations.
