Özet
Edirne sehri, Anadolu ile Balkanlar -Avrupa- ve Akdeniz arasında önemli ticaretyollarının kavsagında bulunuyordu. Sahip oldugu kara yolları agı sayesinde Avrupa'nın pekçok yerinden ticaret ürünleri ülkeye gelmekteydi. Ayıca Osmanlı topraklarında üretilen hertürlü ticarî esya Edirne vasıtasıyla ihraç edilmekteydi. Edirne ticaretinde Müslim ve gayriMüslim tüccarın yanı sıra Osmanlı tebaasından olmayan tüccarlar da ticaret faaliyetlerindebulunuyorlardı. Yerli tüccar kendi mamulü olan yerli ürünleri Edirne içinde pazarladıgı gibiEdirne dısına da ihraç ediyordu. Edirne'nin ihtiyacına cevap veremeyen ürünler ise stanbul,zmir, Tekirdag (Rodoscuk), Gelibolu gibi bölgeye yakın Osmanlı sehirlerinden veya yurtdısından ithal ediyorlardı.Ticareti yapılan ürünlerin tamamı gümrük vergisine tabi idi. Ticaret yapan tüccarmensup oldugu millî ve dinî kimlige göre belirlenen oranda gümrük vergisi ödemekzorundaydı. Gümrükten geçen her türlü esya, esyayı getiren tüccarın adı ve mensei ilegümrükte ödedigi vergiler Edirne gümrük defterlerine kaydedilirdi. Elde edilen gelirdenöncelikle gümrük çalısanlarının maasları, gümrük hanelerin kiraları ve mukataadan maasalanların ödemeleri yapıldıktan sonra elde edilen gelir stanbul Emtia Gümrügü Sandıgı'nagönderilirdi. Edirne gümrügü bölgedeki pek çok gümrük gibi stanbul Gümrük bölgesidâhilinde bulunuyordu.

Edirne is situated at the crossroads of important trade routes connecting the Anatolianpeninsula and the Mediterranean region to the Balkans and also to Europe. Thanks to itsgeographical position, it served as an important station for the passage of the Europeancommercial goods to the imperial domains. In a similar way, the city was an important tradecenter for the export of goods manufactured in the Empire. Thus, apart from the Muslim andnon-Muslim Ottoman merchants, Edirne hosted foreign merchants. The local merchants notonly worked for the local markets, but were also involved in the marketing of the local goodsto the other parts of the Empire. Some products unavailable in the city were imported eitherfrom other Ottoman cities like Istanbul, Izmir, Tekirdag (Rodoscuk) and Gelibolu or fromabroad.The commercial products passing through the city were subject to the customs duties,the rate of which changed according to the ethnic and religious identity of the relatedmerchant. The records of the any commercial transaction were to be kept in the registers ofEdirne customs. In these records, it is possible to find information about the identity of themerchant, the type and origin of the commodity, including the amount of the custom tariffsthat have been paid. The revenue extracted from Edirne custom duties was, first of all, sparedfor the payment of the salaries of the customs officiers, the rents of the warehouses and thefinally for the payment of the shares of the share-holders from the mukataa. The remainingamount would be sent to Treasury of Istanbul Customs House for Wares. As many of theother custom duties in the region, the Edirne customs was subject to Istanbul customs.
