Özet
John Dewey 19 ve 20. yüzyılın önemli filozof ve eğitimcilerindendir. Onunfelsefesi ve eğitim düsüncesi, yasadığı ülke olan Amerika Birlesik Devletlerinin eğitimdüsüncesini sekillendirmek ve Amerikan düsüncesinde bir aydınlanma meydanagetirmeyi amaçlar. Bu sebeple Dewey, sosyal düzene uygun, bireyin ve toplumsallığıngözetildiği bir eğitim modeli gelistirmeye uğrasır dolayısıyla bilimsel, sosyal ve siyasalgelismelere uygun bir teori olduğunu düsündüğü `demokratik eğitim' teorisini ortayaatar.Demokratik eğitim aslında Dewey'in doğrudan isimlendirdiği bir kavramolmamakla birlikte, demokrasinin, onun felsefesinin ve eğitim düsüncesinin neredeysetamamını kapsayan bir düsünce olması bakımından bu sekilde bir nitelendirmeyapılmıstır. Dewey'in eğitim felsefesinin kuramsal boyutunu olusturan ilerlemecilik,yeniden kurmacılık ve yapılandırmacılık akımları tamamen demokratik ilkeler ile ortayakonmustur.Ayrıca bu kuramlar doğrultusunda ortaya koyduğu öğrenci merkezli eğitimanlayısı ve onun kapsamında eğitimin yöntem ve içeriğini belirleyen islevselci psikolojiile desteklenen aktif öğrenme yaklasımı ve yaratıcı problem çözme yöntemi de doğalolarak O'nun demokrasi düsüncesi doğrultusunda sekillenmistir. Bu çalısmada, anahatlarıyla John Dewey'in felsefesi ve demokratik eğitim anlayısı elestirel bir biçimdeele alınacaktır.

John Dewey is one of the important philosophers and educationalists of the 19thand 20th centuries. His philosophy and educational thought aim to shape his country?s,USA, educational thought and to bring about an enlightenment in American thought.Therefore, he tried to develop an educational model which is in accordance with thesocial system and in which the individual and the socialization are considered. Hence,he put forward ?the democratic education theory? which he thought to be in accordancewith the scientific, social and politic improvements.Democratic education, in reality, is not a term he directly coined but it wascalled as democratic education in that democracy comprises almost the whole part ofthis philosophy and educational thought. Progressivism, reconstructions, andconstructivism, which comprise the theoretical dimension of Dewey?s educationalphilosophy, are presented thoroughly with democratic principles.Active learning approach and creative problem solving method which weresupported by functionalist psychology determining the method and the contents of theeducation, and student-centered education which he put forward in accordance of thesetheories are naturally shaped according to his democracy thought. This study willcritically investigate John Dewey?s philosophy and his thought of democratic education.
