- 114 - VII. SUMMARY Hydroquinone (HQ) is used as a reductant in photographic developing and in industrial ink production. It is one of the products of the oxidative benzene metabolism. HQ also finds application in cosmetics production. There is very limited information available on the developmental toxic effects of HQ. The effects of HQ were studied on the chick embryos on 3. and 4. days of incubation. HQ was dissolved in physiological saline and injected into the air sacs of the eggs at doses ranging from 0.0625 to 40 ug per egg. The controls received an equal amount of saline only (0.05 ml per egg). On the 15th day of incubation, the live embryos including controls were removed from the eggs and examined for gross malformations. In all, 585 eggs were utilized for this study. The LDso values for HQ on the third and forth day of deve'opment were 3.59 and 15.63 ug per egg respectively. HQ has produced gross malformations such as body hemorrhage, curled claws, everted viscera, defective beak, exencephaly and monophtalmia in developing chick embryos at dosages ranging from 20 to 0.0625 ug per egg in both groups. The various types of malformations and their incidences in both the groups were higher in comparision with the controls, but it is not significant statistically (p>0.05). Following the 3. and 4. days of incubation, the overall incidence of abnormal embryos was 24,7% and 22.22%, respectively. The results of this study indicate that HQ is embryotoxic at higher doses and that teratogenic potential of HQ is unremarkable.
