levels, LDL cholesterol and BMI levels and a negative corelation between age and glucose levels was found. A significant corela tion between the levels of cholesterol and triglyceride and, insulin and triglyceride was found in both men and women with NIDDM. In women with NIDDM and control men, there was a relation ship between total cholesterol and LDL/HDL levels. Another sig nificant corelation between HbA-, and triglyceride levels was found in control women. In control men, a positive corelation between age and total cholesterol, and, age and LDL cholesterol was observed. In both control and NIDDM groups, there was a relationship between total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. A positive corelation between total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol levels was found only in control group. This study concludes that, disorders in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism contribute improve atherosclerosis in dia betes. 88SUMMARY Disorders in carbohydrate and lipid-lipoprotein metabolism is responsible for atherosclerotic heart disease incidence in diabetes mellitus. Chronic high blood glucose like many other proteins causes glycosylation of lipoproteins and erythrocyte hemoglobin and variation in their functions. Resistance in adipose and muscle tissue in NIDDM causes decrease in insulin effect on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and contributes improve vascular complications of diabetes.. In this study the effect of diabetes on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism was researched. For this purpose, 16 women and 15 men with non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus were compared with healthy 15 women and 14 men. After the comparison, glycosylation degree of hemoglobin, lipid-lipopro tein profile and, insulin levels were determined. HbA, and glucose levels were high in NIDDM group. HDL cholesterol levels were lower in NIDDM than they are in control group. Men and women with NIDDM had higher levels of triglyceride and LDL/HDL, respectively. The levels of insulin were found to be the same in NIDDM and the control groups. There was a positive corelation between glucose and HbAj_ levels, and, glucose and insulin levels in men with NIDDM. In women with NIDDM, a positive corelation between insu lin and total cholesterol levels, total cholesterol and BMI 87levels, LDL cholesterol and BMI levels and a negative corelation between age and glucose levels was found.
