Özet
82 SUMMARY Vegetable production in greenhouses in the southern part of Turkey is increasing continually. Intensive use of pesticides in these greenhouse activities threatens the consumer due to probable pesticide residues incorporated to the vegetables. This study is an attempt to investigate to probable pesticide residues in the vegetables grown in the greenhouses around İçel by using the gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer combined system as the final analytical instrument. The samples of tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines, green beans, green peppers and zuccunies were collected on a representative base from the greenhouses of Erdemli, Kocahasanli, Kazanli and Ovacik districts of Mersin. Each vegetable sample was divided in the two portions and one portion was washed thoroughly with water prior to homogenization.' After homogenization in stainless steel blenders, the sample were extracted sequentially with acetone and dichloromethane and the extracts were concentrated by using rotary evaporator under reduced pressure. After cleaning by eluting through activated charcoal and florisil columns by using diethylether and petroleumether mixtures as eluants, the extracts were concentrated to about 1.5 mL volumes by using rotary evaporators and sealed in crimped vials. All the solvents used in this study were from Merck and had pesticide grade purity. The pesticide analysis were performed with a Hawlett- Packard 5980 series Gas Chromatograph coupled to a HP 5970 series Mass Selective Detector.83 Recovery percentages were needed for the final calculation of the concentration of pesticide residues in the original vegetables. The recovery work were carried out by injecting standard pesticide into the noncontaminated vegetable samples. The same procedures for homogenizing, extracting, cleaning and concentrating were carried out and the percentage recovery values determined for each pesticide in various vegetable samples. In general, washed samples had less pesticide residues than the unwashed samples indicating that the some fractions of the pesticide residues were on the surface of the vegetable samples only. The results of the pealed aubergine and zuccuni samples showed that the skins of the vegetables were also carrying considerable fractions of the residual pesticides. The quantitative results obtained in this study were all below the CODEX and Turkish (were applicable)“maximum residue limit”values.
