Özet (Çeviri)

The aim of this thesis is two-fold. First, examples of the language used in a humorous way by various novelists will be selected and analyzed. This data will then be correlated in order to determine in what ways and to what extent the language used contributes to the humor. In linguistic terms, this can be expressed as the influence of form on function. The form refers to the actual words used and the function is the humor itself. It is assumed that humor is intentional rather than accidental. On the basis of this assumption, the author contends that novelists manipulate language in a particular way in order to achieve the desired effect: in this case, humor. Therefore, there must be certain analyzable characteristics of the style of the selected novelists which are directly responsible for the humor. Three well-known British novelists have been chosen as being representative of a specific period as well as of a particular mode of humor. Jonathan Swift is generally considered the best satirist of the eighteenth century. However, A Tale of a Tub was selected in preference to the more popular Gulliver's Travels. Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was selected as a prime example of the use of puns. Although this type of humor is disparaged by some literary critics, it deserves serious consider ation since Carroll is recognized as the all-time expert at punning. Evelyn Waugh is probably the best British proponent of the twentieth century American school of black humor. This is the most popular style of humor in contemporary America but it seems to be employed on a much lesser scale in England, satire being the preferred humorous device. Although it has some characteristics in common with satire, black humor tends more towards under statement. The other main distinguishing characteristic of black humor is that it treats serious subjects such as death and religion in an extremely light-hearted manner. Black Mischief is the novel which seems to best fit the criteria. By analyzing samples of humor from these three novels, the author will determine the specific characteristics of each mode of humor and formulate generalizations about the language of humor. If some common factors are found in these three novels, then linguistic criteria for the language of humor can be proposed.
