SUMMARY This research was performed as a descriptive study with the purposes to identify the nurses' knowledge about the protection of hepatitis B infection. The sample of the study consists of 100 nurses working in the hospitals of province Ankara. The special hospitals were outside the sample. Three hospitals of Health Ministry are selected by random method. These hospitals are Ankara Numune Hospital, Medical Faculty of Ankara University ibni Sina Hospital and Social Security Hospital Ankara. Because it can affect the results of the study the nurses working in operating rooms, critical care units, blood banks, clinics for out patients, intensive care units, dialysis units and infection units were left outside of the study. Data is collected by using the questionnaire form. In the first part of questionnaire form there are information about the personal characte ristics. The second part of the questionnaire is covered questions in relation to hepatit B infection definition, contamination way and preventive methods for protection. The questionnaire form were applied to the nurses between 24.8.1992 and 26.8.1992 by the researcher according to the inter views with nurses one by one. To reduce the communication between nurses an inquisitor help the researcher on application. Data was evaluated by using percentages, Chi-Square test and average. According to the results of this study the knowledge score of the nurses were inadequate. The average of the knowledge score were found (x 36.56) low. The effect of nurses education level, length of work,- 46 - previous involvement with Hepatit B infection to the knowledge score were not significant. The nurses knowledge score working in medical wards were found higher than the score of nurses working in the surgical wards. Nurses education, relation to subject after graduation didn't effect the nurses action for vaccination or searching for medical tests. Previous involvement with hepatit B infection were found 15 % and all nurses who involved with the infection were working for 6 or more years. The proportion of the nurses who vaccinated were low. The most important cause for not vaccinating were ignorance. According to the results of the study; collaboration with hospital administration, personal health services and infection control committee inservice education for the nurses, hepatit B infection searching investigation and vaccination programs can recommendable.
