Özet
37 SUMMARY Febrile convulsion is an event in childhood, usually occuring between 5 months and 5 years of age, that is associated with fever, which are not due to infections of the central nervous system. In our study, we included all previously healthy 57 children aged between 8 months and 5 years, presenting febrile convulsion, in Pediatrics Department of Haydarpaşa Numune Hospital between 01.08.1993 and 31.07.1994. All these 57 children with febrile convulsion were examined in order to evaluate the risk factors sucrr as age of onset, gender, family history, temperature, cause of fever, type of convulsions and recurrens rate. The mean age at presentation was 31 ± 15.6 months. Of the children, 12 % were 0-12 months, 58% were 1-3 years, 30 % were 3-5 years of age. Male /female rate was 1.59/1. The family history was positive in 28 % of the cases, and 75 % of them were first degree relatives. Mean temperature was 39 ± 0.48° C. On the basis of clinical characteristics of the convulsions, 81 % of the children had simple, 19 % of them had complex convulsions. 41 % of the cases had their first convulsion and 26 % of them were < 12 months; 26 % had more than one convulsion and 27 % were < 12 months; 33 %38 had three and more previous convulsions and 37 % were <12 months. Cause of fever in febrile children was most commonly upper respiratory tract infections (72 %). Lumber puncture was performed in 17.5 % of the cases, 70 % of them were under the age of 12 months. Results were normal. All blood and urine examinations were found normal. In 38.5 % of the cases, EEG was performed ten days after the convulsion; 77 % were normal, 23 % of them showed pathological findings. Our study suggests that; because of the risk of having further febrile convulsion and subsequent epilepsy, more attention must be given to the evaluation of childhood febrile convulsion.
