Özet
The historical hospital is continued its function with the Out Patient building on the north and the Maternity Clinic on the south. Although the hospital is placed in. Galata, one of the crowded neighbourhoods of Istanbul, it has a relatively, quiet athmosphere because it is far from the main streets. The area being fairly poor for green spaces? the hospital building tried to create its own green in the courtyards placed on the south and east. For the heating, not only radiators but also tiled stoves are used in the spaces designed as wards, and original tiled fireplaces can be seen in the rooms. Every equipment and material used in the hospital had been brought from England. In this study, the preliminary project of the building, the biography of the architect (Harry Percy Adams) and the publication about his other hospital buildings (The New Royal Victoria Infirmary, The Dorking Infirmary, The Bedford County Hospital, The Bristol Royal Infirmary) were kindly provided by The British Architectural Library of the R.I.B.A. in England. For the restoration project, studies started by comparing the preliminary project and the present situation of the building. The original state, the additions and changes during the application process have been determined and a detailed scaled drawing has been prepared. Photographic documentation sufficient. enough to explain the present situation of the building have been collected. This thesis consists of seven chapters and its aim is to describe the building and to make some proposals for its use. The first chapter contains a general introduction and explanations about the aim of this work. The methods that were adopted during the study have also been explained in this chapter. On the other hand, the quality of the architectural products in general both in Europe and the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century has- been examined. In the second chapter; the historical development of Galata, the story of the building have been explained and the site of the building has been examined by means of different dated maps of Galata. xxn
Özet (Çeviri)
THE RESTORATION PROJECT OF THE BEYO?LU HOSPITAL SUMMARY The Beyoğlu Hospital originally called as The British Seamen's Hospital was constructed in 1901-1904 on the slopes of Pera, south of the Galata Tower and on a slopy land to the west and south. The building which forms a complex with the Nurses1 Home on the western side was designed by the English architect Harry Percy Adams. This building has been choosen as a thesis subject because it is öne of the important examples of a foreign style and culture in istanbul and it is at the present under the pressure of functional changing due to its intensive usage. The thesis is based upon the principle of determining its situation, history, architectural characteristics and of making a comparison with the other hospital buildings of the same architect. it is known that on the site of the present building, there was the first British Hospital built in 1846-1854 by another English architect W.J. Smith. The English architect Smith, who has worked för The Ottoman Empire in the second half of the 19th century, has built some other buildings in Kuledibi, in the vicinity of the first British Hospital: The British Consulate (1849-1858), The British Consular Prison (1849-1859), Consular Offices, Shipping (1858) and St. Helena Church (1849-1856; today in the courtyard of the British Consulate). From these buildings, only Consular Offices, Shipping survives and its is being used as the Materriity Clinic of The Beyoğlu Hospital. The British Consular Prison, The British Consulate and The British Hospital were deraolished in 1901 and were replaced by the British Seamen's Hospital. xThe historical hospital is continued its function with the Out Patient building on the north and the Maternity Clinic on the south. On the other hand, the quality of the architectural products in general both in Europe and the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century has- been examined. In the second chapter; the historical development of Galata, the story of the building have been explained and the site of the building has been examined by means of different dated maps of Galata. xxnM20 in the basement floor which was designed as an ambulance garage has been transformed into a material s töre. On some walls, windows and doors were opened later. Sinks in the rooms are later additions. Most of the floorings were changed. Wooden plates 8 cm. think were added to> the walls of the southern wing of the ist floor} suspended ceilings were placed in the south corridor of the basement floor, in the southern wing of the ist floor and the northern wing of the 4th floor. There is no serious structural deformation in the building. An important crack ör bulging are not observed and there is not serious deterioration in the horizontal elements. Thin plaster cracks are seen on the exterior façades. Some of the slatted shutters don't exist any more and their paint is fairly damaged. The façades were enlivened by giving horizontal and vertical movements and therefore several roof types can be seen in the building. The three wings radiating from the copper domed central tower, have hipped roofs covered with Marseilles tiles. Besides these roofs, there are also two hexagonal flat roofs on the eastj two small copper domes at the east end of the northern and southern wingsj four slated roofs on the north-east, north-west, south- east and south-west of the central tower. Moreover, the projections on the east ends of the northern and southern wings are covered by single-pitch and hipped roofs. in addition to the visual effect created by the projections on the façades, different roof types and window designs, the arched entrance and the decorative brick courses on small towers and chimneys add an attractive taste to the building. The central tower with its buttresses at the 7th floor level and its round arched windows, has a predominant place in the istanbul skyline. Today, The Beyoğlu Hospital is surrounded by“Berekedzade Camisi Street”on the north,“Maternity Clinic”on the south,“Bereketzade Medresesi Street”on the east. The“Out Patient”building which was built in 1976 is situated on the north and the Nurses' Home on the west of the main building. xiiThe historical hospital is continued its function with the Out Patient building on the north and the Maternity Clinic on the south. Information about the location, the history and the architect of the building and general characteristics and detailed definition are also given in this part. Interior spaces and facades have been defined and they have been supported with drawings and photographs. Different types of windows and doors have been explained, information about the structure (bases, walls, floors, roofs), the construction technique, materials and deformations of the building have been given. In the fourth chapter; the hospital (including the 19th Century Ottoman hospitals) as a building type have been defined and their evolution has been explained. The fifth chapter is about the style of the building and its comparison with the similar examples of its period and other hospital buildings of Harry Percy Adams. This comparison has been made by considering the plans, masses, elevations, structural techniques and materials. In the sixth chapter; the restitution of the building has been undertaken, based upon the evidences and the preliminary project. The seventh chapter contains proposals about the restoration of the building. The main principles for determining the type of interventions is to fulfill the environmental necessities and to take appropriate measures in order to help the Beyoğlu Hospital to continue to live as a. valuable building. xiv
