This thesis aims to display how the critical theories of Mikhail Bakhtin and Umberto Eco can be conjoined in order to found the basics of a new semiotics (the semiotics of the carnival) that will appreciate the stance of the aesthetic idiolect of literary works with respect to contemporary semiotics. The thesis also includes an application of carnival semiotics in the Sirens-episode of Ulysses by James Joyce.
