12a SUMMARY: Greek hieros-gamos from hieros, sacred, and gamos, marriage. The sacred marriage is have sex with the gods of abundance, especially on the Middle East of society of mythes The vases of arcaic and classical Athens offer colorful evidence of a sumptuous, exotic rite of passage, rich in pageantry and likened in song to union of the gods. There are two wedding vases. One of tehe lebes gamikos or wedding bowl, and a louthrophorss or bath carrier.used to carry water for the prenuptiai baths of the bride and groom. This one of many illustrations of the wedding on Athenian vases from sixth to four century B.C. The wedding was a favorite subject especially on objects intended for use by women. The ceremony began with sacrifices and dedications to gods, to solicit their protection of the bride and groom during what was considered a dangerous rite of passage. After these preliminary rituals had been completed, both bride and groom prepared for the wedding by bathing. Baths were required by Greek religion before sacrifice and many other rituals, but the wedding baths were especially elaborate. After bathing, the brige and groom were dressed and adorned for the festivities to come. The grrom was anointed with costly perfume and then dressed in afineiy woven white cloak and acrown woven of special pints, and a crown woven of special planth.129 Âfther the bride and groom were dressed-, the festivities began with a sumptuous feast for both families and their friends. In addition to the meat from the wedding sacrificies, there from the wedding sacrificies, there were special bridal cakes called sesame, made of honey and sesame seeds. At the end of feast, the bride was united with groom to begin to procession to her new home. This passage took, place at nigthfall, and appearance of Evening Star. Inthe end.the groom's contingent had to previal, and the groom took possion of bride by ritual gasture of gripping her wrist. Once the couple had entered the bridal chamber anû their friends and relatives had let them alone, the door was closed by a friend of the groom called the thyroros, or guardian of the door. With the coming of dawn, the brige and groom were awakened to begin another day of festivities. This was called the epaulia, when friends and relatives brouht gifts to the new couple.
