PLAY WITHIN PLAY (SUMMARY) In This Work, Under the title of“play Within a play”, stage plays which include, other stage plays, dances, dramatic performances, sport competitions, fortune-talent and intelligence games, child's games, imitations and change of costume-personality plays are examined. în addition to this, stage plays which are included in other stage plays are handled in sections of puppet plays,“ortaoyunu”, shadow plays, peasent plays and plays which are written accoding to western playwriting tradition. Play within a play is not only examined according to its genre, but also handled according to the function that it fullfills within the play it is included. Although it changes depending upon the play that it is applied, general functions of play within a play may be lined as follows a) Creating chances for the playwrite in writing or expression b) Casting a light on the personalities and physchologies of the dramatis personae c) By creating or solving a problem in events, decreasing or increasing the tension in the play d) To describe and display the atmosphere of the period that the plays story takes place, e) To provide visual quality for the play f) To provide estrangement-alienation g) To create additional theatrical taste h)To increase the entertainment valvue of the play or to create funny effects, i) To introduce traditional performance types j) To provide possibilities for the staging of the play k) To provide rhythm to the play and save it from creating boredom. -206-This study is carried out, in order to be more efficient and academical in playwriting and the dramatical studies of the plays which uses the theatrical device of“play within a play”. -207-
