Özet (Çeviri)
This dissertation consists of essays on the role of social networks in thelabor market. The first essay examines the role of social networks in thelabor market. I review the empirical and theoretical contributions in theliterature. Although the prominent role of social connections in the jobsearch process is well established, the empirical evidence regarding the effecton the labor market outcome seems to be conflicting. Another importantquestion in the literature is why social networks are formed. Answering thisquestion will give us more insight on the effects of social connections and theconflicting empirical evidence. I also discuss the literature on endogenousnetworks which models network formation as a result of strategic behaviorof individuals. In the second essay titled ?Endogenous Social Networks in the LaborMarket?, I develop an equilibrium model of endogenous network formation. In my model workers differ in their job loss rates and networks enable workersto find jobs more frequently. It is costly for workers to help other membersof their network and workers trade off costs against the benefits they willderive from more frequent job offers when they are unemployed. My modelis an extension of search and matching model by Pissarides that capturessocial networks in the matching process and allows for heterogeneity in jobloss rates. I analyze survey data from PSID with information on job findingthrough social networks. Consistent with the data, our model predicts thatworkers with higher job loss rates are more likely to use their social contactsto find jobs; they have shorter unemployment durations and lower wages. The endogenous framework allows me to analyze how networks are affectedby labor market conditions. I show that a more generous unemploymentbenefit scheme will reduce the use of networks and there is a negative correlationbetween unemployment rate and the fraction of workers using socialcontacts to get a job.
