Özet (Çeviri)

The Ince Blundell collection which is now held hi Liverpool is significant in representing a typical English country house collection of the eighteenth century. The importance of the collection lies in the fact that it remains intact and gives an idea of how such collections were gathered and arranged. The collection was gathered by Henry Blundell (1724-1810), a wealthy landowner from Lancashire. Blundell first visited Italy, particularly Rome, in 1777, where he laid the foundation of his collection. The collection comprises 600 pieces of which 400 are ancient, the rest were either commissioned by Blundell or copies of ancient pieces. The collection represents the activities of a number of well-known dealers, restorers, artists and agents active in this period. It was displayed in BlundelTs beautifully planned Garden Temple and Pantheon at Ince Blundell Hall. The face collection included a large variety of sculpture. This dissertation focuses on the pieces of the collection that were still in situ at the Hall in the early 1990s. These pieces are generally minor reliefs, of which there are approximately fifty items. These have been neglected and have not been studied properly before. Recent research on the collection has primarily focused on the large and important sculptural pieces such as the female and male portraits examined by Jane Fejfer in 1993 and 1998. Other important groups are currently the subject of scholarly studies. The pieces that were examined as part of this study are not considered as unique, and many show well-established motifs of the middle to late Imperial artistic repertoire. This research has revealed many similar examples to the Ince reliefs, and nrovides the basis for a better understanding of how the workshops of Rome operated. The pieces of the collection examined are also put in their archaeological and eighteenth century collecting context Moving beyond the elements of the Ince Blundell collection, the trade in antiquities was well-established from the time of classical antiquity, but collecting increased dramatically from the eighteenth century onwards. This was particularly the result of the 'Grand Tour', which helped the formation of many private and eventually public collection in Europe and England. The British Museum and the development of its classical collections are examined in this dissertation as a case-study. Study of the Ince Blundell collection focuses attention on the important issue of the real ownership of works of art. An evaluation of this topic has been added, as well as a section of the illicit trade of antiquities in Turkey. The Parthenon marbles are also considered as a case-study.
