Turkey's European Union (EU) integration process has had many effects upon Turkish automotive industry parallel to the effects on Turkish economy. This dissertation focuses on the evolution of Turkish automotive industry throughout the EU integration process of Turkish economy since Turkey embarked on open market economy by signing the Customs Union (CU) agreement in 1996. It also puts an emphasis on the current competitiveness of the automotive industry in Turkey compared to the six fierce competitor East European countries which are Russian Federation, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovak Republic, Hungary and Romania with the help of using McIvor's outsourcing framework. The automotive industry in Turkey has recently been one of the leading sectors thanks to its increased competitiveness, and it has been significantly contributing to Turkey's rapid industrialisation process in the last decade as well. Therefore, this research is important to investigate the reasons behind such successful production and export performances in detailed. The research method adopted throughout this study is literature survey which mostly consists of the most recent data from articles of credible journals, relevant books and publications, the official websites of motor vehicle producer companies and globally respected organisations in the automotive industry. At the end of the research, it is found that CU agreement and Turkey's full EU membership perspective has both beneficially impacted on Turkish automotive industry, especially in the long-run. Based on this particular competitiveness analysis and discussion, another finding is that with an overall performance, Turkish automotive industry is the most competitive one among the others.
