This essay examines the role of national liberation movements, the imperial past and nationalist thought in the democratic development of India and Turkey. Through a comparative analysis of India, Turkey and Pakistan it is argued that the takeover of an imperial polity by a strong nationalist political movement with strong intellectual traditions created favourable conditions for the growth and consolidation of the democracies in India and Turkey. It has also been argued, within the context of the above political and intellectual process, that India and Turkey developed peripheral governmentalities. This, in turn consolidated the democratic processes in both countries. For the analysis of political processes in India, Turkey and Pakistan, Mill's comparative method has been used, with some reservations. For the analysis of nationalist thought, an interpretive approach has been employed. In conclusion, what has been underlined is the vital role of a national liberation movement, a Westernizing imperial polity and a strong nationalist intellectual tradition in the emergence of democracies in the peripheral cases of India and Turkey.
