Özet (Çeviri)

Although Flow Theory (Csikszentmihalyi, 1975) stresses the importance of challenge in promoting enjoyment, empirical support for this proposition has been both inconsistent and difficult to interpret. Examining the pattern of findings from Experience Sampling studies which have examined the relationship between challenge and enjoyment, however, suggests that these inconsistencies may be attributable, at least in part, to the different types of activities that were sampled. Specifically, challenge may play a more important role in promoting enjoyment in the context of intrinsically-motivated activities (e.g. sports, games) compared to activities that are not intrinsically-motivated (e.g. most school-related activities). This dissertation is based on two studies. The purpose of Study 1 was to examine the potential domain-specificity of the relationship between challenge and enjoyment in real-world activities. Results indicated that challenge was positively associated with enjoyment for sports, games, and hobbies, but not for school-related activities. Study 2 isolated an intrinsically-motivated activity (internet chess) and examined the relationship between challenge and enjoyment in this context. As expected, challenge was strongly related to enjoyment. Furthermore, consistent with the“optimal challenge”proposition, the relationship between relative skill (as indicated by ELO chess ratings of participants and their opponents) and enjoyment was represented by an inverted-U shaped curve. Attentional involvement partially mediated this curvilinear relationship, and Intrinsic Motivational Orientation moderated it. Exploratory analyses clarified the meaning of challenge by anchoring it to objective indicators of difficulty. Implications for theories of intrinsic motivation are discussed.
