114 ABSTRACT Travel writing is defined as writing, which describes the natural beauties of the places travelled and represents the traditions, customs and habits of people living in these places. For the travel writings depending upon reliable information and observations, sciences like history, geography and sociology can be useful sources. Children as adult readers learns much from travel writings to improve their imaginations and develope their cultural backgrounds. The main aim of this study is to research the contribution of travel writings in Turkish Lecture Books of Elemantary Schools to the education of 8th grade students. The branch of literature about the travels domestic and/or abroad is defined as“travel memoir”in ancient turkish, and as“travel writings”or“travel books”in modern turkish. In old times when travels were restricted by a variety of impossibilities, travel writings were of great importance for people who were not able to travel abroad.“Travel memoir”s so told in ancient turkish were standing for T.V.'s, have now lost their importance by the introduction of modern communication era. Another point attracting attention is the insufficent number of travel books adressing children. In fact, travelling and travel writings, help much for devoloping ones' knowledge, resarch and guestioning abilities, and finally his/her personality. The important role of travel writings in the education and the development of imagination of children is of no doubt. These realities had been the main motivation source for this study. In the study, the quantitiy and quality of travel writings included in Turkish Lecture Books were examined, the sufficiency of these writings were discussed, their contributions to the educational background of students, taking their SESs(*) into account, were tried to be discovered. Moreover, suggessions were developed according to the results of the study. *Socio-Economic Status
