Özet
IV ABSTRACT This thesis explores the Afro-Caribbean experience of Britain in two chapters:“Afro-Caribbeans in Britain”and“Britain Under the Effect of Black Minority Cultures”. The first chapter explores the life experience of Afro-Caribbeans in Britain. They came to Britain after the Second World War to find decent jobs to earn money and to provide good education for their children. But, what they faced instead was discrimination in housing first and at every stage of their experience of Britain. They were also unemployed in large numbers or were given poorly paid jobs which whites did not want to do. Their children also suffered because of the language difference, culture shock and even racial discrimination at schools. Over the years they tried to find a voice in politics to fight for their rights politically and socially. They were successful to a certain extent but it wasn't until the late 1980s they were represented in the British Parliament. While all these were happening some blacks tried to react or represent themselves through art of which film and music were among the most effective and visible. The second chapter explores to what extent black film and music has been influential in 'white' British culture and in the entertainment industry in Britain. Though not many examples have been produced until today, black film making andfilm makers could find a place in the market not only because they made movies that can sell, but also they were talented enough and they had the chance to prove it. For black musicians things were a bit easier, because black music was already welcomed abroad (especially in the USA) before it was introduced in Britain. Many types of black music were performed especially from the 1960s on and some of them (i.e. Reggae and R&B) had great influence on white musicians in producing their own repertoires. It seems that blacks have been more effective and visible on the cultural platform than the political.
