Özet

SUMMARY Individuals are in continous interaction with their environment from birth on and develop different behavior styles. Environmental factors and especially parents are of utmost importance in the formation of these behavior styles. In other words, children may acquire different behavior styles through observing their parents. One of these behavior styles is leadership. Individuals start working life with their learned leadership style. However, behaviors are not constant life-long and can be influenced by different situational factors. Leadership learned by parents can be influenced by later life experiences and working environment. Among various influential factors there may be a supervisor. In this research, importance of parental and supervisory influence in leadership style is examined. First, acquisition of behavioral styles and parental influence in education, career development and leadership are overviewed. Leadership theories, on the other hand, indicates that leadership is learned but prone to change through later life experiences. Subjects are top managers mainly from Sandoz Pharmaceutical Company. Supervisory Behavior Description Questionnaire (SBDQ) is used as a scale for leadership style. This scale consists of 48 items under 2 factors:“Concern for People”and“Concern for Production”. Statistical analysis shows that, perceived leadership styles of parents and supervisors may influence subjects' leadership style. In terms of“Concern for Production”, there is a similarity between the subject's evaluation of supervisor and himself. This similarity may indicate a supervisory influence in leadership. Besides, subject's evaluation of parent and supervisor is also similar. Subjects are more influenced than supervisors when they are perceived as similar to their parents. Another finding is that, mothers'“Concern for People”is more emphasized by subjects indicating a maternal influence in this aspect.Type of high school is another factor influencing leadership style. There is a difference between subjects graduated from Turkish and foreign high schools in the evaluation of their supervisors'“Concern for People”. Subjects from Turkish high schools evaluate their supervisors higher. In other words, they are more influenced from their supervisors when compared to foreign high school graduates. Leadership style of subjects is also examined based on age, sex and working period. Findings are in“Results”section.
