öz AKADEMİK AMAÇLI BİR İNGİLİZCE KİTABININ DE?ERLENDİRİLMESİ: ÖRNEK ÇALIŞMA Ayman, Beril Yüksek Lisans Tezi, Eğitim Bilimleri Bölümü Tez Yöneticisi: Yrd. Doç. Dr. Ahmet Ok Aralık 1997, 163 sayfa Bu çalışmanın amacı bir okuldaki öğrenci ve okutmanlann Akademik amaçlı İngilizceye dayanan ve Üst Orta Düzey öğrencileri için tasarlanmış bir kitabı, öğretim materyali olarak nasıl değerlendirdiklerini belirlemektir. Bu çalışma Bilkent Üniversitesi İngiliz Dili Meslek Yüksekokulundaki BASE 3 kitabım kullanmış Üst Orta Düzey öğrencileri ve okutmanlarla yapılmıştır. Bu çalışmanın denekleri 90 Üst Orta Düzey öğrencisi ve 45 okutmandan oluşturulmuştur. Öğrenciler seçkisiz örnekleme yöntemi ile seçilmiştir. Ayrıca, öğrencilerin cinsiyet vebölümleri, okutmanların ise cinsiyet, İngilizce Eğitimindeki deneyimleri ve uyrukları hakkında bilgi de toplanmıştır. Verilerin toplanması için araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen Kitap Değerlendirme Anketi ve görüşmeler kullamlmıştır. Okutmanlar için anket İngilizce, öğrenciler için ise Türkçe hazırlanmıştır. Aracın geçerliliği incelenmiştir. Toplanan verilen ortalama, standard sapma ve frekans dağılımı gibi istatistiksel analizleri SPSS paket programı kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Mülakat sonuçlan ise araştırmacı tarafından not tutularak İcaydedilmiştir. Yapılan analizler sonucunda hem öğrencilerin hem de okutmanların kitap hakkında genelde olumlu oldukları ortaya çıkmıştır. Veriler okutmanların öğrencilerden daha olumlu olduğunu göstermiştir. Hem öğrencilerin hem de okutmanların kitap hakkında olumsuz olduğu bazı noktalar vardır ve bunların geliştirilmesi gerektiği belirtilmiştir. Çalışmanın bulgularına dayanarak okutman ve öğrencilerin kitap hakkında olumsuz buldukları noktaların geliştirilmesi önerilmektedir. Okutmanların kitabı en etkili biçimde değişik tip öğrencilere göre nasıl kullanmaları gerektiğini bilmeleri gerekmektedir. Bu bulguların aynı zamanda seride hazırlanacak diğer kitaplar için de yararları olacaktır.

ABSTRACT EVALUATION OF AN ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES TEXTBOOK: A CASE STUDY Ayman, Beril M.S., Department of Educational Sciences Supervisor: Assistant Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ok December 1997, 163 pages The purpose of this study was to find out how different parties in a school; that's the students and the instructors evaluate a textbook which is based on English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and designed for Upper Intermediate level students as an instructional material. This study is a case study which was carried out in Bilkent University School of English Language (BUSEL) with Upper Intermediate level students who studied the textbook, Bilkent Academic Studies in English 3 (BASE 3) and with the instructors. Subjects of the study consisted of 90 Upper Intermediate students and 45 instructors. The students were selected randomly. Information about students' sex and departments and information about instructors' sex, experience in ELT and nationality was obtained as well. iiiThe instruments used in this study were mainly the questionnaires and interviews. Textbook Evaluation Questionnaire which was developed by the researcher was utilized for the data collection. The questionnaire prepared for the instructors was in English whereas the one prepared for the students was in Turkish. Validity of the instruments was examined. The Statistical analysis was carried out by utilizing SPSS software program. The analysis involved means, standard deviations and frequency analysis. The interviews with instructors and students were recorded by the researcher by taking notes. The data analysis revealed mat both the students and the instructors were generally positive about the textbook. The results indicated that the instructors' perceptions about the textbook were more positive than the students'. There were some aspects of the textbook which students and instructors felt negative about and thought that these should be improved. Based on the findings of the study, it is suggested that aspects of textbook which students and instructors think about negatively should be improved. The instructors should be well-trained in how to exploit the textbook effectively in their classes with different types of learners and they should know how to raise students' awareness in using the textbook. The findings of the study also have implications on the production of the other books in the series.
