Since its descending, the Qur'an has been the main source settling down in the base of thought for its believers to direct their world opinions and their relations with Allah, humanbeings and other creatures, and applied to for solving intellectual, social and psychological problems. Although there is no doubt for the Muslims that the Qur'an is from Allah and complete, the interpretation of its verses by humanbeings differs from one person to another. The social and cultural environment lived in, the values owned and some conditions like tendencies and professions have important influences on the interpretation of the Qur'an. So we come to a conclusion that the Qur'anic information and the information obtained from the Qur'an by humanbeings are not in the same degree. While the first is absolute, the second is relative. Understanding this point very well is too significant to explain why many fractions and sects different, even opposite to each other have come into being in the history of Islam although the source is the same. Especially atomic approaches to the Qur'an without taking its completeness, into consideration have significant effects in the appearance of these fractions and schools like Mu'tazila and Jabariya. In this regard, it is important to examine the methods and works of the commentators of the Qur'an like Imam Ebu Mansür al-Mâturîdî (d. 333/944), who approached the Qur'an in integrity and has influenced its interpretation significantly. We believe that this mission is a responsibility on the shoulders of today's scientists and intellectuals. Because the dynamics of the society can be brought into action by only scientists and intellectuals who have the power of interrogation. In this way a significant relation between the past and future can be established, and moves forward can be made. Imam al-Mâturîdî, who is the author of the work titled“ Ta'wilat AM al- Sunna”, the subject of our study, appeared in the middle of all intellectual, dogmatic, political, social and cultural unsteadinesses, and bringing the intellect and traditions together in a meaningful integrity, brought fundemental and moderate interpretations to the verses of the Qur'an. He, in his study and interpretations, inclined to the248 conciliation of the various tendencies and mentalities dominating his era, and placed the mentality of Ahl al-Sunna on its real place in the axis of the Qur'an and sunna. So we chose the methodological analysis of al-Mâturîdi's“Ta'wilat Ahl al- Sunna”as the subject of our study. We believe that our study will make contributions to the Qur'anic interpretations of today and shed light on a certain period of the history of the Qur'anic interpretation. Our study consists of an introduction and three chapters. In the introduction some information about the subject, aim and importance of the study, and about the process öfthe subject and the sources is given. In the first chapter the political, social, dogmatic, intellectual and scientific changes and developments in the Islamic world from descending ofthe Qur'an to al- Mâturîdi's period, and al-Mâturîdi's mission with regard to these developments, and also his wife and environment, his scientific aspect and works, especially his Ta'wilat are taken up. In the second chapter, the methodological qualities of Ta'wilat like al- Mâturîdi's interpretation method, his rational and philologic approach to the verses of the Qur'an, his usage of traditions and narratives in the interpretation, the seperation of“ta'wfl”and“tafsîr”by al-Mâturîdî are taken up. The third chapter is allocated to some interpretation problems like as nâsih and mansûh (abrogating and abrogated verses of the Qur'an), mutashâbihât (obscure passages in the Qur'an), the inimitability of the Qur'an and al-Mâturîdi's approach and interpretations to these problems. In this study we based on the hand-written copies of Ta'wilat in Hacı Selimaga Library with no. 40 and in Kayseri Râşit Efendi Library with no. 47, and in addition we applied to the Samarkandî annotation of Ta'wilat in lightening some obscure and complicated points in Ta'wilat. We believe that this study will illuminate the way for further studies in this subject and help the researchers. Study is from us, success is from Allah.
