Özet
The Yesilcam studio system ofTurkish national cinema started to break down with the emergence of social realism movement in the mid-1960 and the liberal 1961 Constitution, which was against censorship. That is how internal migration, which staıted in the 1950s due to rapid industrialization and modernization in agriculture, was taken as a topic in film . in this thesis I explore the different ways femininity has been depicted in the Turkish internal migration fılms of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. I discuss the reasons for these differences in the context of Turkish politics and the feminist movement of each ofthese decades. I also provide a context on the development of Turkish national cinema in order to place fılms on internal migration within the Turkish cinema history. I analyze how traditional patriarchy and Kemalist progressive patriarchy were depicted in Halit Refig's Migrating Birds (Gurbet Kuslari, 1964). I explore the representation of the 1970s Leftist movement's approach to women 's status in Omer Lutfi Akad's The Bride (Gelin, 1973), and finally I study how the principals of the 1980s Turkish feminist movement were articulated in Muammer Ozer's A Handful of Paradise (Bir Avuc Cennet, 1985). My goal is to trace these changes in the status of women in relation to the dominant ideology of each decade. I argue that both traditional patriarchy and Kemalist progressive patriarchy are deeply-rooted in the Turkish society that albeit the emergence of the Turkish feminist movement ofthe 1980s, the representations of femininity in internal migration fılms are continued to be defined by the norms of the two types of patriarchy mentioned above.
