Özet

Bu çalışma ilkokul 4. sınıf düzeyindeki öğrencilerin fen bilimleri dersinde“Maddenin Özellikleri”ünitesinde yer alan“Saf Madde ve Karışım”konusuna ait başarılarını tespit etme ve varsa kavram yanılgılarını ortaya koymayı amaçlar. Bu çalışma betimsel model kullanılarak yürütülmüş olup sonuçlar nitel olarak analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın araştırma grubunu İstanbul ilinde bulunan 3 farklı devlet okulunda 4. sınıfta okuyan 433 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Veriler kavram başarı testi uygulanarak elde edilmiştir. Kavram başarı testi; çoktan seçmeli, boşluk doldurma, doğru/ yanlış ve açık uçlu soru çeşitlerini içermektedir. İstanbul'da bulunan bir devlet okulunda öğrenim gören, 35 kişilik 4. sınıf öğrenci grubu ile testin güvenirliğini artırmak amacıyla pilot uygulama yapılmıştır. Sonuçlar değerlendirilirken uzman görüşleri alınarak madde güçlük indeksi (p) ve madde ayırt edicilik indeksi (r) değerleri hesaplanmıştır. Değerlendirme sonucunda bazı sorular ve seçenekler değiştirilmiş, testin son hali ile esas uygulama yapılmıştır. Uygulama sonuçları nitel olarak sunulmuştur. Araştırma sonucunda öğrencilerin saf madde ve karışımlar konusunda oldukça fazla kavram yanılgısına sahip oldukları, karışımları ayırma yöntemleri konusunda eksik bilgiye sahip olmaları ve bunun sonucunda yine kavram yanılgısı oluştuğu, erime kavramını çözünme kavramı yerine kullandıkları, açık uçlu sorulara cevap vermekten kaçındıkları, tanım yapmakta ve mikroskobik düzeydeki olayları açıklamakta zorlandıkları tespit edilmiştir. Bu bulgular sonucunda fen bilimleri derslerinde öğretimden önce kavram yanılgılarının tespit edilip giderilmesinin önemi vurgulanmış ve bunun için kullanılabilecek bazı yöntemler önerilmiştir.

This study aims to determine and highlight 4th grade students' achievements in and, if there is any, misconceptions about the topic“Pure Substances and Mixtures”within the unit of“Properties of Matter”in science lesson. The study has been conducted in accordance with descriptive model which is one of the qualitative research methods. The sampling of the research consists of 433 students who are 4th graders from 3 different state schools located in Istanbul. An achievement test on concepts which includes various question types such as multiple choice, true/false, fill in the gap, and open ended questions has been used as a means of collecting data. In order to increase the reliability of the test, a pilot study has been conducted on 35 4th graders studying at a state school located in Istanbul, the results have been evaluated in company with the experts in the field and, thus, the test has been developed by calculating the 'IF'(item facility index) and 'DI'(difference index) indices. In the light of the assessment, some items and distractors have been altered, the major study has been conducted with the improved test and the results have been analyzed qualitatively. As a result of the study, it has been determined that 1) the students have a great many misconceptions about pure substances and mixtures, 2) they have lack of knowledge on methods of separating mixtures, and, thus, creating misconceptions in turn, 3) they use the term 'melting' instead of 'dissolution' mistakenly, 4) they avoid answering open-ended questions, 5) and they have difficulty in making definitions and describing events on microscopic scale. In consequence of these results, the importance of detecting and eliminating misconceptions before the instruction in science classes has been emphasized and some methods that can be used have been suggested so as to achieve this.
