Özet

KOÇ, İbrahim. Kıyamet sonrası distopyalarda doğa ve çevre temsilleri: Maggie Gee'nin The Flood, Cormac McCarthy'nin The Road ve Margaret Atwood'un The Year of the Flood romanlarının ekoeleştirel okumaları, Doktora Tezi, İstanbul, 2021. Bu tez, kitlesel insan ölümlerine neden olan ve toplumların sosyal, politik ve ekonomik yapılarını dönüştüren bir takım felaketleri içeren üç kıyamet sonrası distopyanın ekoeleştirel incelemesidir. Batı toplumlarında 21. yüzyılın başından itibaren kıyamet kurgusunun yükselişinin nedenleri arasına 11 Eylül saldırıları, yaşanan ekonomik sorunlar ve dünyanın çeşitli yerlerinde gerçekleştirilen askeri operasyonlara ilave olarak, çevresel bozulmanın yarattığı tehditler de eklenmiştir. Ekoeleşrirel okumalar, çevre sorunları ile insan faaliyetleri arasındaki ilişkiye odaklanırken, genellikle ekonomik sistemin bu faaliyetler üzerindeki yönlendirici etkisini göz ardı etmektedir. Bu çalışma ise, ekososyalizm felsefesi ve Marksist ekoloji teorilerinden yararlanılarak seçili romanlarda bu ilişkiyi ortaya çıkarmayı amaçlamaktadır. İnsan ve insan dışı doğa arasındaki etkileşim üzerine toplumsal adaleti savunan, eşitlikçi ve düzen karşıtı bir hareket olarak ekososyalist bakış açısı, bilimsel ve teknik gelişmeler ile ekonomik gelişmeleri reddetmeden, kapitalist toplumlardaki ilerlemecilik misyonuna karşı eleştirel bir tavır içindedir. Bu teori ve ilgili kavramlara dayanarak bu tez; yazarları, öyküleri, ortamları ve kıyamet motiflerine ilişkin davranışları önemli ölçüde farklılık gösterse de, ele alınan, Maggie Gee'nin The Flood (2004), Cormac McCarthy'nin The Road (2006) ve Margaret Atwood'un The Year of the Flood (2009) romanlarının doğa-insan etkileşimi ve ekonomik tercihler arasındaki doğrudan ilişkiyi doğru şekilde kurduğu sonucuna varmıştır. Bu eserler toplumsal düzenin çöküşüne bağlı olarak yükselen şiddet ile çevresel bozulma arasındaki ilişkiye ilişkin temalar içermektedir.

Representations of nature and environment in post-apocalyptic dystopias: an ecocritical reading of Maggie Gee's The Flood, Cormac McCarthy's The Road and Margaret Atwood's The Year of the Flood PhD Dissertation, Istanbul, 2021 This dissertation is an ecocritical examination of three post-apocalyptic dystopian novels that feature certain catastrophic events that cause mass human deaths and transform the social, political and economic structure of societies. In addition to the 9/11 attacks, occasional economic problems and military operations carried out in various parts of the world, the threat posed by environmental degradation is also seen among the reasons for the rise of apocalyptic fiction in Western societies since the onset of the 21st century. While ecocritical readings focus on the relationship between environmental problems and human activities, they often ignore the guiding effect of the economic system on these activities. However, this study aims to reveal this relationship in selected novels by making use of ecosocialist philosophy and Marxist ecology theories. The ecosocialist perspective, as an anti-establishment and egalitarian movement that defends social equality in terms of human and nature interaction, without rejecting the scientific and technical advances and economic developments, is highly critical of the progressivist attitudes in capitalist societies. Based on this theory and related concepts, this dissertation concludes that although their authors, stories, settings, and treatment of apocalyptic motifs differ significantly, all the three novels studied – Maggie Gee's The Flood (2004), Cormac McCarthy's The Road (2006) and Margaret Atwood's The Year of The Flood (2009), feature details that show the connection between human and nature interaction and economic choices. Among other themes, they each demonstrate a concern for the relationship between the rise of violence due to the collapse of societies and environmental degradation.
