In the wake of everlasting sanctions and discussions, a framework agreement between the Islamic Republic of Iran and 5+1 countries (the US, the UK, France, China, and Russia plus Germany) was signed in Geneva in July 2015. This was a“historic moment”, which gave new impetus to efforts to end the 36 years of distrust between Iran and the West. This thesis analyses the process of the nuclear deal from a constructivist perspective. The thesis concludes that the nuclear deal will not bring about closer political integration between Iran and the West in the short-term, particularly in light of the fact that some members of the US Congress is forcefully against the deal and that in Iran the topic is causing internal disputes between the President of Iran, Hassan Rouhani, and the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and between the Rouhani government and the Principalists. A number of factors, including the discourses used and the ideas, identities, and values being promoted by the deal, will determine whether the ongoing process will necessarily lead to the integration of the two sides.
