1) Background: Pre-performance Routines (PPR) focus the attention on execution of 3 self-paced skills. However, conducting PPR intervention on externally-paced 4 performance requires further attention. Thus, this study aims to show if PPR enhance 5 externally-paced performance under real-time pressure. Second, a small number of 6 studies have investigated the impact of PPR on competitive state anxiety. Therefore, 7 the study also aims at measuring whether PPR influence competitive state anxiety 8 levels under pressure. 9 2) Methods: Ten competitive Counter-Strike: Global Offensive players participated 10 in a four-week PPR intervention. Their performance scores, the competitive anxiety 11 levels, utilising Mental Readiness Form, and perceptions of the intervention with 12 training logs were investigated by a pre-/post-test design. 13 3) Results: PPR significantly enhanced the performance scores when comparing two 14 phases. However, cognitive and somatic anxiety as well as self-confidence scores 15 remained the same. The training logs, in contrast, indicated an improved attention, 16 calmness and self-confidence. 17 4) Conclusion: The study discovered that, akin to self-paced events, there is a 18 possibility to improve externally-paced performance using PPR intervention. Besides, 19 optimisation of the mental-state in competitive environment can be achieved via PPR 20 despite the requirement of further investigations. The study also presents example of 21 providing mental-skills training in eSports context.
