SUMMARY In Turkey, as it shows at the 'Health Statistics' (Republic of Turkey, Ministry of Health), booked in 1994, one can see, that 92.000, were registered as a nurse. In the same statistics, one can see, that only 60.000 doctors were registered, in that same year(24). This makes clear, that as a natural result, as soon as one compares both statistics, the balance is not even. Like that, as soon one gives lessons in the field of forensic science, like forensic nursing, to nurses, they can be of good help to the doctors as soon they start to work. As it shows at the lecture-programs for nurses, held in the nursing-schools at the University of Turkey, no lessons are given in the field of forensic science, forensic nursing. As one knows, at the Institut of Forensic Science at the University of Istanbul, a sexual assault unit was established. The target is, to teach nurses and doctors in the field of sexual abuse to rise the knowledge and to be in the service of the community. As it shows in the diagram at the capitel of findings, the knowledge of forensic science has to be build up. The one's, who are able to use the highly sensitive and complicated equipment of technical science; who are able to continue further education; who are able to understand the principles of primary education in public health and jurisprudence; who are able to recognize the increasing crime rate in clinical-practice; these will be the Forensic Nurses of the future. Her duty is neither to accuse the offender, nor to defend the victim; but to collect the forensic evidence for a trial. She recognizes the strength of the forensic evidence, as well as the weakness. The statistics show, the majority of the students and nurses approve of insufficient education. For this reason, human failings are unavoidable. The forensic nursing education presupposes a curriculum innursing science, forensic science and criminal science to educate a special qualified reg. nurse, who will be able to unite bio-medical nursing and general konwledge injustice and sociology. In clinical practice a forensic nurse will be able to recognise, to data and to analyse a case. She expresses concern to the whole situation, rather to get fixed on a specific detail. The destination, which each victim has the right to demand, is: to increase the sensibility of the medical examination,. to increase the quality of the medical exam,. to increase the quality of collecting forensic evidence. All together, the victim will be able to save time and money, also will the Public Health Department and the Institution of Law. The summary of the result of this work is:. To educate nurses to work in synthesis with law enforcement and the forensic sciences. ? To introduce the role development of a forensic specialist in nursing practice.. To introduce a new perspective in the holistic approach to victims of violent crime in clinical or community based institutions.. To unite in a common concern for the plight of victims of criminal activity and traumatic accidents.. To participate in active research projects and the dissemination of research information.. To develop formal education programs in forensic nursing at both the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, providing initial and continuing education and specific guidelines for the practices and policies that must be implemented in the investigation of trauma.. The forensic nurse is not a forensic medical expert, nor a criminal investigator. She is a reg. nurse with a specfic education in forensic science, who will be able to help the victim. One should not forget, to clear up a crime, several experts have to cooperate. 26
