Trait anxiety which is a stable disposition that makes people perceive unambiguous stimuli as more threatening and respond in more anxious ways as it increases, can be found excessively in anxiety disorders. This excessive trait anxiety is found to be related to fear generalization, which is the spread of the fear responses to a specific stimulus to other related stimuli. Fear generalization is considered to be time-dependent, in which as time passes, it was suggested that people generalize fear more, due to forgetting what is safe or dangerous. Considering these links, the current study aims to look at the time dependency of fear generalization with a generalization paradigm while also considering the covariate effect of trait anxiety. The experiment consists of two days where for the first day, the participants undergo a fear acquisition paradigm where they are presented with two faces (CS+ and CS-), and one of the faces (CS+) is paired with aversive pictures (US). When participants undergo the second day of the experiment where they see the CSs and four faces that are the morphs of the CSs (GS). Both in acquisition and generalization, participants gave fear and US-expectancy ratings to the faces. Results showed no time-dependency for generalization effect, where for fear ratings participants generalized fear until GS2 and for US-expectancy until GS3. No covariate effect of trait anxiety except the US-expectancy ratings for one-day group was obtained. Although not all the results are significant, a bigger clinical sample with a longer interval between two days might have resulted in significance for both the time dependency of fear generalization and also the covariate effect of trait anxiety.
