Özet
The present study investigates the difference between monolingual Turkish speakers and bilingual Turkish speakers of English in their processing of predictive conditionals in Turkish. This study aims at testing if Turkish L2 users of English process predictive conditionals different than the monolinguals in accordance with the Multi-competence Theory (Cook, 2003) which has been supported by various research in the recent decades. For data collection, grammaticality judgment tasks are used. 24 tasks which all include a context and three sentences about it are presented to the participants and then they are asked to evaluate the grammaticality of these sentences depending on the contexts. The results of the study are evaluated using both descriptive statistics such as mean, median and standard deviation and also SPSS to show that the differences found between the groups are statistically significant. The analysis of the results shows that there is a statistically significant difference between monolingual and bilingual Turkish speakers in the processing of Turkish predictive conditionals. This result confirms Multi-competence Theory's claim that bilinguals' both L1 and L2 are different than the monolinguals of those languages (Bassetti and Cook, 2011). This finding implies that L2 users have a different language system than monolinguals which suggests that they should be evaluated and compared on their own terms rather than monolingual native speaker norms.
