Özet
In this study I will analyze how Fatma Aliye tries to build a reliable narrative voice which gains the trust of her readers in her novel Muhadarat, through proving the moral credentials of the three determining factors of the voice, the real author, the narrator and the heroine. Fatma Aliye is taken to be the first woman novelist to write in Turkish. Her works came out in the Tanzimat period of the Ottoman Empire when the novel was still at its very early stages.1 The narrators in these novels are intrusive and go on to long commentaries on the text. This is attributed to the oral meddah story telling tradition. One can also see that when love is being described, most Tanzimat writers resort to the tropes of mesnevi tradition of highly stylized poetic narratives.2 Tanzimat writers were very concerned with getting a moral message across to their readers. They looked upon the novel form as a great Western invention which they could use a big classroom. This attitude was evident also in Fatma Aliye. She wanted her lessons to be effective and to be taken at her word when she spoke, either through her narrators or her characters. I will first look at the special mentor-protégé relationship Fatma Aliye had with the leading novelist of the time, Ahmet Mithat. This relationship resulted in a jointly written novel, Hayal ve Hakikat, and in this work, we can see what sort of odds Fatma Aliye was putting herself against when trying to a recover a sense of reliability in her works. After a brief look at this novel I will move onto Muhadarat and look at the issue of gaining the trust of the audience on three levels. She tries to make her story believable through the voices that are operating in the text. The voice of the author, narrator and the heroine. All these voices need to be reliable for the story to reach its target audience not just as a piece of literature, but also a text of moral teaching Bu çalışmada Fatma Aliye'nin Muhadarat romanında okuyucunun güvenini kazanan bir anlatı sesini nasıl bu sesin üç belirleyici unsuru olan gerçek yazar, anlatıcı ve kadın kahramanın ahlaki güvenirliğini kanıtlayarak ikna etmeye çalıştığını çözümleyeceğim Fatma Aliye Türkçe yazan ilk kadın romancı olarak kabule edilmektedir.
