Özet

Her öğrenci grubunun kendi bölümüne göre İngiliz Diline gereksinimi vardır. Öğrencilerin gereksinimlerine uygun ders programı hazırlamak için öğrencilerin öğrenme gereksinimlerini bilmek gerekir. Bu çalışmada Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesi Hukuk Fakültesinde okuyan birinci, ikinci ve üçüncü sınıf öğrencilerinin İngiliz Dilindeki dil gereksinimlerinin neler olduğu belirlenrneye çalışılmıştır. Hukuk öğrencileri kendi meslek yaşamlarında dile, hukukçu olarak, özel anlamda gereksinim duyacaklardır, dolayısıyla aldıkları Özel Amaçlı İngilizce derslerinin bu amaca hizmet etmesi gerekir. Bunları saptamak için toplam 117 birinci sınıf, 87 ikinci sınıf ve 87 üçüncü sınıf olmak üzere 291 öğrenci ile çalışılmıştır. Verilerin toplandığı dönemde dördüncü sınıf öğrencisinin olmaması bu çalışmanın sadece birinci, ikinci ve üçüncü sınıf öğrencileriyle yapılmasına olanak vermiştir. Ayrıca, bu öğrencilere ders veren 4 İngilizce öğretmeni ve 7 bölüm öğretmeni bu çalışmada yer almıştır. Öğrencilere verilen ankette yer alan sorularla öğretim görevlilerine verilen ankette benzer soruların olması öğrencilerin ihtiyaçlarını her iki açıdan da gözler önüne seri esi açısından önem taşımaktadır. Araştırma doğal sorgulayıcı yaklaşımla yapıldığı için araştırmacı veri toplanırken öğrencilere hiçbir müdahalede bulunmamıştır. Öğrencilere uygulanan anket 10 bölümden oluşmakta ve toplam 66 soru içermektedir. Sorular seçmeli olarak düzenlenmiştir ve soru şıklarının açık biçimde yazılmasına özen gösterilmiştir. Öğrencilerinkine benzeyen bir anket de ders öğretmenlerine verilmiş ve her iki anketten elde edilen bilgiler birbirleriyle karşılaştırılmıştır. Bu çalışma için 4 araştırma sorusuna cevap aranmıştır İlk iki soru öğrencilerin akademik anlamdaki gereksinimlerinin neler olduğunu, hem öğrencilerden, hem de her iki bölüm öğretmenlerinden soran sorulardır. Üçüncü soru öğrencilerin çalışmalarında gereksinim duyduğu dil becerilerinin ne olduğunu soran ve son soru ise öğrencilerin gereksinimlerini benzerlik ve farklılık açısından irdeleyen sorulardır. Öğrencilerden elde edilen anketlerin istatistik değerlendirme işlemlerinin çoğunluğu Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesi bilgisayar merkezinde yapılmıştır. Önem sırasına göre sırlama sorulan ise tüm anketlerin teker teker değerlendirilmesi suretiyle elde yapılmıştır. Ders öğretmenlerine verilen anketlerin sayısı az olduğu için bunlar elde değerlendirilmiş ve öğrencilerden elde edilen verilerle karşılaştırılmıştır. Gereksinimler geçici ve göreceli oldukları için her dönem başında her yeni gelen öğrenci grubuna akademik anlamda gereksinim analizi çalışması yaptırmak en doğal yaklaşım gibi görünmektedir. Analizlerin sürekli olarak sürdürülebilmesi için ayrı bir ünitenin sırf bu çalışma için ayrılması gereklidir. Bu çalışma bir anlamda bu konunun üzerinde hassasiyetle durulması gerektiğini vurgulamaktadır.

Every department has specific needs in terms of English language depending on students' expectations, wants and requirements. Knowing the students' learning needs is very important in determining the deficiencies of the learners and designing a language teaching course according to the identified needs. If course designers, teachers and sponsors recognize what the learners need to learn specifically, what they do not have to do, and identify their specific needs for the course, this will make them concentrate more on the relevant materials and objectives. The purpose of the study is to identify and specify the academic English needs of the students studying in the Faculty of Law at Eastern Mediterranean University, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The target students will need English in their future life as lawyers and/or attorneys. The legal English courses are designed for the special needs of the students, for their future life. The sub-aim is to find out if there is any correlation between the findings of the students' needs analysis questionnaire and the teacher's structured interview. The study was carried out within the naturalistic enquiry conventions in which the researcher intervenes the data collection as little as possible. There were 117 first year, 87 second year and 87 third year students participating in the study. In addition to this, there were 4 English language lecturers offering ELT 182, ELT 282 and ELT 382 courses and 7 subject matter lecturers offering subject courses in the department of the same students, involved in the research. Asking the students and the lecturers almost the same questions gave the researcher a chance of correlating the findings and drawing clear conclusions. The questionnaire has 10 different parts and contains 66 questions. The questions are designed in multiple choice format. A correlated structured interview was conducted to the lecturers, and the findings were compared and contrasted. The study contained four research questions. The first two research questions concerned the reports on the academic English needs of the target students by the students themselves and the lecturers. The third research question considered the language skill/s the target students need in their studies, and the last research question was on the parities and disparities of the needs of the students. The reports of the students and the lecturers were correlated and clear findings were drawn. The analysis of most of the data obtained from the students is done by the computer center of EMU. In the light of the statistical analysis of the data, most of the tables were prepared manually. Questions asking for the order of importance can not be analyzed statistically. Therefore, they were analyzed and prepared manually as well. As the data provided by the students have been completed, the analysis of the data of the lecturers have started, and this data analysis is explained with the students' data besides the related table. It is admitted that the academic needs change in time. Therefore, it is necessary to administer a needs analysis to every specific group before they start learning English. Their identified needs should determine the course design. Since such an undertaking was considered important by the lecturers participating in the research, there could be a separated unit analyzing the academic needs of the students. The present research emphasizes the importance of this issue.
