Özet (Çeviri)

Encountering traumatic events could affect individuals distinctly. Experiencing traumatic events can give rise to both PTSD complaints and post-traumatic growth. Those who are dealing with trauma unsuccessfully tend to suffer from PTSD more than the ones who are dealing with trauma successfully. Plus, those who can deal with trauma successfully tend to experience post-traumatic growth. Yet, it is unknown how individuals start to experience post-traumatic growth after experiencing a traumatic event or even after suffering from PTSD. Firefighters are one of the risk groups who deal with various traumatic situations on a daily basis. This study aims to deepen our knowledge regarding what factors are influencing the development of post-traumatic growth and its relationship with PTSD. People who have a high sense of coherence are described as the ones who can easily comprehend the meaning in experienced events and cope with them. Therefore, we hypothesized that a sense of coherence might predict post-traumatic growth among firefighters. In addition, experiential avoidance and PTSD severity might have a moderating effect on the relationship between sense of coherence and post-traumatic growth. To investigate that, an inquiry is conducted with a sample of 324 Dutch firefighters. The following measures are administered: Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC), Post-traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ-II), and PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). Our findings point out a nonsignificant relationship between sense of coherence and posttraumatic growth. Furthermore, neither experiential avoidance nor PTSD severity has a moderating effect on the relationship between sense of coherence and post-traumatic growth. Therefore, our findings yielded that sense of coherence did not significantly predict post-traumatic growth.
