Background: Growing evidence has demonstrated that there is an association between sportrelated concussion and subsequent musculoskeletal (MSK) injury. Limited studies have identified the effects of the following factors, including sex, player position and injury location. Objective: The study aimed to analyse the association between concussion and subsequent MSK injury in UK university rugby athletes with the effects of sex, athlete position and injury location. Method: Injury data were collected from the Sports Development Centre database at Loughborough University. A total of 430 injuries in 181 athletes (55 females and 126 males) were included in this retrospective cohort study. Two statistical models were performed; first the comparison of the concussed and non-concussed athletes and second, the comparison of pre- and post-concussion periods. A period of 365 days was analysed for the following variables; MSK injury incidence, occurrence, severity, time from the initial injury, injury location, athlete position and sex. Results: The MSK incidence after concussion was 43.3% greater than the controlled athletes and 76.7 % greater than the pre-concussion period over 365 days (p=0.012 and p=0.023, respectively). However, the MSK injury severity was not significantly different in both first and second models (p=0.813 and p=0.936, respectively). The concussion effects on subsequent MSK injury was not injury location-specific. Conclusions: The concussed athletes were more likely to sustain subsequent MSK injury. However, a concussion was not related to more severe MSK injuries. Further studies with larger sample sizes should be performed regarding the influence of sex, athlete position and injury location.
