Project planning is one of the most essential project management processes for the successful completion of construction projects. A large number of tools have been developed to assist project management practitioners while carrying out project planning activities in this process. Many practitioners utilise these planning tools without knowing their main principles, benefits and limitations. The lack of such knowledge is the biggest obstacle for the effective usage of these tools, which negatively affects the success of project planning. To provide knowledge on these subjects, this study aims to analyse the functions, principles, benefits and limitations of widely used traditional planning tools and investigate the usage of them in construction projects. It also aims to develop a guideline for widely used planning tools, which provides useful information to project management practitioners. This study has adopted an inductive research approach, a qualitative research strategy and secondary data collection. All of the data used in this study was collected through an extensive literature review. While conducting the literature review, peer reviewed journal articles and books were preferred to gather reliable and accurate information on the research subject. Then, all data gathered from these literature sources was critically analysed and findings were combined to achieve the research aim and objectives. In order to identify the most widely used traditional project planning tools, existing survey results were analysed. This analysis has shown that SWOT Analysis, Work Breakdown Structure, Network Diagram, Critical Path Method and the Gantt chart are the most popular traditional project planning tools. These planning tools were investigated and the main functions, principles, benefits and limitations of each tool were found. Based on the findings, a guideline consisting of widely used planning tools was developed to help project management practitioners more effectively utilise these tools in their construction projects.
