Vocabulary is considered as the crucial and irreplaceable part of English language learning and it is seen as one of the main reasons of language learners' weakness or strength in English language. The situation of people's giving importance to vocabulary more has caused increased researches to research various kinds of techniques for teaching lexis. Teaching vocabulary through the use of dictionary and through guessing meanings from the context are regarded as ones of the effective techniques for vocabulary teaching. Since knowing lexis is a crucial part of learning and teaching English language for language teachers and learners, this subject has motivated me to find out which two techniques are more effective in teaching vocabulary : teaching vocabulary through guessing meaning from the context or through the use of definitions from dictionary? In order to find out which two methods are helping learners to store and remember vocabulary more permanently on their minds, I conducted qualitative study in which the data was collected through online tests. The effectiveness of two vocabulary techniques, guessing meaning and use of dictionary in English language classes was investigated in the study. It was conducted on elementary learners. Due to the COVID 19 and lockdown, the study could not be done in a classroom. Participants did their tests on an online platform. The participants in the study were 32 English learners whose levels were elementary. They were divided into two groups. One group was experimental group, and the other group was control group. Questions which aimed to teach vocabulary through guessing from the context were given to the former group and the latter group was exposed to questions which were prepared with using dictionary technique for vocabulary teaching. In order to find out answers of my research questions, quantitative data were used through tests. This dissertation evaluates two different vocabulary teaching methods with the view of testing effectiveness of these two methods over language learners by comparing the results of the survey and the dissertation will considerably shed light on English language teachers and language learners in their process of both language teaching and learning.
