The present dissertation explores UEFA's legal demands within the context of intellectual property from countries that bid for organising the finals phase of the European Football Championship. The scope of these demands has progressively expanded through the years. The purpose of these demands is to provide protection for the UEFA's intellectual property rights which constitute a foundation for the sponsorship, merchandising and broadcasting deals. While some host countries give in to the demands of UEFA; others refuse to pass laws for various reasons. Whether countries pass tournament-specific laws or not, the rights protection regime has given rise to an effective enforcement programme where intellectual property rights have penetrated through traditional borders of protection and expanded to the point where these rights can be deemed as monopoly rights.
