I have researched the evolution of Islamic education from the Prophet Muhammad's time through to the Ottoman era for my PhD study. This research is an investigation of the social role of education in Islamic history. It is a chronological survey of Islamic education focusing on critical analysis. This study mainly deals with the major Sunni Caliphal Islamic educational centres of Islamic history, commencing from Madinah to Damascus, Baghdad, Cairo, and Istanbul. The study's hypothesis is that no education of a civilization with a life-span of over a thousand years was stagnant and totally devoid of any change, either positive or negative. Thus, this study has identified and demonstrated evolutionary changes in Islamic education through time and Islamic education is presented as a social phenomenon rather than a static institution. This research deals with the evolution of primary and higher education institutes such as the mosque, madrasah, külliye, bimaristan kuttab and maktab during the Prophetic, Rashidun, Umayyad, Abbasid, Mamluk, and the Ottoman periods. It also deals with the evolution of education philosophies and scholars' status during these historical stages. The research establishes that education is a major component of Islamic civilization that has continuously affected, positively or negatively, the whole of the society. What has been established by this study is that Islamic education cannot be understood as one single concept but as a phenomenon that has many aspects; all influenced by religious, social and political forces throughout Islamic history
